Young Naturalists
Realizing that an enjoyment of nature can start at any age, Malaspina Naturalists Club formed the Young Naturalists Club of Powell River in 2007.
Events are geared toward the 6 – 12 year olds, but any age of child is welcome to come along so long as an adult attends as well. This is a family learning experience.
We hold events every season and announcements about the events are placed in the Around Town section of the Shopper, in posters distributed around town, and by phone call to families who have previously shown an interest in taking part. Events are also described on our Events page for the Young Naturalists.
Participation is by donation. In the past we have built bird boxes and bird feeders, learned about the migration of the snow geese, found strange shoreline critters, learned about the night sky, found our way through a forest with a map, carved soap stone hearts and arrows, learned about pressing flowers, assisted with worm farming, learned about lichens and helped to band Purple Martins.

We are also affiliated with the Young Naturalists Club of BC. YNCBC has a membership fee which includes a year’s subscription to their magazine NatureWILD, activity pages, and support for working toward awards. This can be a great incentive for the whole family to assist children in developing their knowledge of the natural world. More information about YNCBC can be found at www.ync.ca. We have forms at the club if you wish to join the provincial organization. Otherwise, come along to an event and enjoy.
